【Horimiya】Why is Isumi Miyamura covered in piercings and tattoos? An in-depth look

Are piercings and tattoos compensatory behavior?

Miyamura has numerous piercings and even tattoos, but he never explicitly states why he has them, nor does anyone around him, including Hori, ever ask.
The reason why he has the tattoos is never stated in the story (at least not in the anime), so we have to unravel the true meaning of the tattoos through fragmentary recollections and statements.

First of all, I think there is a simple reason that “I like it as a fashion”.
When Sota suggested a feather-like tattoo, he smiled and said, “It’s a boil,” so I’m sure he likes it.

However, Miyamura tries to hide his piercings and tattoos as much as possible at school, and he always changes his clothes in the bathroom to avoid being exposed, especially when it comes to his tattoos.
Of course, it’s not unnatural for her to hide her piercings and tattoos, since she could be expelled from school if a teacher found out about them, but she never brings them up in her personal life, nor does she try to recommend them to others.
She also stopped wearing mouth piercings some time ago, and she doesn’t seem to have a strong obsession with them.

The next possible reasons are “youthful indiscretion” and “longing for immorality.
These are also possible reasons, but they are not the only reasons, as she has been getting new tattoos since she started high school.

Another possible reason is “compensatory behavior for pain and sadness.
From the descriptions in the book, these are the most likely.

When we feel unbearable pain or stress in our hearts, our defense instincts kick in to alleviate the pain.
If we don’t, our hearts will break.

There are many ways to alleviate the pain, some of which are controlled by reason, and some of which are not.
Going to the batting center or singing karaoke to relieve stress are the most controlled means.
The act of lashing out at others or hitting things belongs to the uncontrolled means.

If the pain is too great, the brain will try to forget the traumatic event itself.
This can manifest itself in the form of amnesia, or it can create a different personality to take over the pain.

In cases where the pain is not this extreme, but cannot be relieved by general stress relief methods, compensatory behavior through physical pain may be used.
This is a forceful way of forgetting or distracting oneself from the pain in the mind by experiencing intense physical pain.

Piercing a hole or getting a tattoo involves two major stimuli: physical pain and a sense of immorality.
There is no guarantee that these will drown out the pain in the heart, but there are many people who subconsciously seek it out.

Miyamura seems to have had a gloomy personality since childhood, and when he was in elementary school, he was unable to join a circle, and was isolated when it came to forming a group of two.
Immediately after the reminiscence scene where he was talked about behind his back, there is a scene where Miyamura, now a junior high school student, pierced his earring with a safety pin.
This is a depiction that strongly suggests “compensatory behavior for pain and sadness.

Although he has been getting more tattoos since he got to know Mr. Hori, he also says, “I’m not going to do any more,” which is a sign that he is no longer as stressed as before.

The fact that Miyamura has nine piercings is proof that he has been in pain for such a long time, and the fact that he hasn’t increased the number of piercings since then suggests that his life has been fulfilling since he met Hori.

Summary

There are quite a few anime characters who have tattoos, but it is hardly unprecedented in romantic comedies.
It was even said that the reason why Horimiya was not animated for a long time despite its popularity was because of this tattoo of Miyamura’s …….
Can’t wait to see how it’s represented in the anime!
