Based on the third season’s sales, ratings, and the current state of the original, we’re going to take a thorough look at what’s realistically possible!

The series has sold a total of 31 million copies! The #1 most popular novel of all time

To Aru Majutsu no Index is a work that doesn’t need to be explained to light novel fans.
It is a mega-hit, boasting the highest total number of copies ever published in a light novel series.
The original work alone sold 18 million copies, and if you include the spin-offs “A Certain Scientific Railgun” and “A Certain Scientific Accelerator”, it sold 31 million copies, an astonishing record.

However, this novel was not an award-winning work, but a debut work for Dengeki Bunko after a year of training, thanks to Kazuma Miki, the editor of Dengeki Bunko, who approached Kazuma Kamike, who did not win any awards for his novel “Schrodinger’s Town”, which was submitted to the 9th Dengeki Game Novel Award.
At the time, Mr. Miki was already in charge of “Shakugan no Shana” and had already made his mark as a talented editor.
By picking up “The Ballad of Shinigami” and “Dokuro-chan, the Sumo-Killing Angel”, he was able to produce “The Ballad of Shinigami”. It seems that his works such as “Shinigami no Ballad” and “Sumo-Tenshi Dokuro-chan” were also published, and it seems that his forbidden books were also published in the same way.

On the other hand, Mr. Kiyotaka Haismura, who was in charge of the illustrations, had done some original drawings for games at the time, but this was his first time to illustrate a light novel.
Even though he had the support of a charismatic editor, it wasn’t necessarily a hit because it was the debut work of two rookies.

However, the first volume, released in 2004, was well-received, and Forbidden Book was quickly on the upswing.
The third volume (the sisters volume) released in September of the same year was highly acclaimed and spread by word of mouth, and with the introduction of Uchisumisoba (Last Order) and the depiction of a new side to the character, the fifth volume established the popularity of the character and he quickly became one of the most popular works in the series.

After that, the number of fans steadily increased, and as of the 11th volume, which was released in 2006, the number of copies sold exceeded 1.2 million.
At this point in time, a media mix was announced, and the full-length story was published in Gan Gan, and the comic version of Railgun was published in Dengeki Daioh the following year.
Although the impression of a hit due to media mixes is strong, in fact, the book was a hit with an average of over 100,000 copies before it was made into a manga, let alone an anime.

And in 2008, the long awaited TV anime adaptation will be held.
The anime adaptation of 4 years and 6 months from the start of publication is actually one of the slowest of all the light novels.
This is probably one of the reasons why this work is misunderstood as a hit after the media mix, but the reason for the slow anime adaptation is probably because of the combination of Railgun and the progress of the manga version, and the fact that it was already at the level of “no mistakes allowed” at the time and was carefully prepared.

The anime produced by J.C. STAFF, which had an established reputation for lanobe-based anime after the success of “Shana” and “Zero no Tsukaima”, was a success, and the average sales of Blu-ray and DVD (disc) exceeded 10,000 copies.
After that, the popularity of the original Railgun series increased as the anime version became a huge hit, and the second season of the series, which aired in 2010, also achieved high sales.
In the same year, it became the first work in the history of Dengeki Bunko that sold over 10 million copies.

Since it became such a mega-hit, it was naturally expected that the anime would continue for a third and fourth season… but forbidden book related works, they stayed away from the anime for a while.
In 2013, the original story “To Aru Majutsu no Index: Endumion no Kiseki” was released and the second season of Railgun was broadcasted, but the third season of Forbidden Book was not produced and a total of 8 years went by.
At the end of the second season’s broadcast, the release of “New Testament” had already begun, and despite the fact that the stock was plentiful, there was a period of silence.

However, in 2018, the much-anticipated third season of the series will finally be realized by fans.
Under the title “To Aru Majutsu no Index III”, the last 22 volumes of the Old Testament (Muji) have been visualized.
