【Sega】A history of home consoles that haven’t always been the stars of their time! A thorough comparison with the mainstream!

1980年後半その2ゲームギアVSゲームボーイの携帯型ゲーム機

SEGA’s Game Gear, a color-screen handheld gaming machine, was released to compete with Nintendo’s Game Boy, the first software-replaceable handheld gaming machine.
Although the Game Boy already dominated the market share of portable game consoles, the appearance of the Game Gear, a portable game console with a color screen, was a hot topic of conversation at the time.
The Game Gear’s specifications were similar to those of third-generation home video game consoles such as the NES and Sega Mark III, and since it could also be used as a portable TV, its performance alone was far superior to that of the Game Boy.
However, the color LCD technology of the time was in its infancy, and the power consumption was high and the battery was expensive, so the Game Boy had an uphill battle against the compact, long-running Game Boy, and as a result, the Game Boy’s stronghold was not broken until the very end.
Incidentally, the Game Gear can be used as a portable TV if you connect a dedicated tuner to it, and since it has an AV terminal, you can also connect the Game Gear to the Super Nintendo to play it.

Early 1990s: Sega Saturn vs. PlayStation Next-Generation Game Console Era

In the 1990s, the use of optical discs became the predominant media for games, replacing the ROM cassette. Game consoles released around this time are called the next generation of game consoles because of their ability to reduce costs compared to the ROM cassette, their large data capacity, and their ability to employ full-scale 3D graphics.
It was during this period that the so-called “console wars” began, and two consoles in particular led the way: the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation. This was also the era when Sega shone the brightest in home video game consoles.

Since 2000 Dreamcast vs. PlayStation 2

It was also around this time that the expressive power of 3D graphics improved dramatically and online games began to be recognized by the world.
Compatible media also shifted from CDs to DVDs with higher graphics quality and original discs using DVD technology.
The major models of this period were Sega’s Dreamcast and Sony’s PlayStation 2, as well as the appearance of Microsoft’s Xbox, and there was plenty of buzz about them.
All three models were developed with an eye toward the future of online gaming, and the Dreamcast, in particular, had a built-in analog modem and other features that made it a more serious online machine than the others.
However, online games were still not widespread at the time, and online games were perceived as being too expensive for the average gamer, so the Dreamcast, with its full-fledged online functionality, was not very popular as a home console, and many of the software titles in the series had been around since the Sega Saturn era, so the gap between the console and the PlayStation 2 was widening.
Unable to beat the competition to the end, Sega announced in January 2001 that it was withdrawing from home console production and platforms, including the Dreamcast, making the Dreamcast effectively Sega’s last console.

Summary

Why couldn’t SEGA be the star of the show until the end when all of the performance was not bad?
When I looked back on the history of SEGA and its home consoles, my first thought was that SEGA was too far ahead of its time.
As is often said in TV and novels, “You can’t be two or three steps ahead of the times, but one step is just right,” and this is exactly what SEGA’s hardware history is all about.
The Game Gear was not popularized by the general public at the end of the day due to the power consumption and costs involved, and the Dreamcast could have been a more complete game console if it had been held back for another five years or so, and it would have been more in line with the times.
