【Final Fantasy】A roundup of numbered titles! All the old and new works are masterpieces.

Final Fantasy XI

This is the first online MMORPG in the series, which was launched in 2002 and launched as a service.
What’s more, it’s still going on as of 2019.
However, the service for PS2 and Xbox 360 was discontinued in 2016, and the game can only be played on PCs at the moment.

A standard MMORPG with a world and system that follows the FF of the past, this is a standard MMORPG in which players switch between more than 20 jobs while taking quests to clear and grow.
Currently, “Final Fantasy XIV” is the main content of FF Online, but this game still seems to have a certain number of active users.

By the way, the staff has announced that the service will continue until 2022.

Final Fantasy XII

This is the twelfth game, the longest interval since the last one.
It was released in 2006 and, despite being a consumer game, featured seamless battles, a hallmark of the online game XI, which made it unlike a JRPG.
It sold as well as X with 2.3 million, but it was even better received outside of Japan, selling over 6 million copies worldwide.

The game no longer has the feel of turn-based command battles: once the enemies that roam the field are within a certain distance, the game goes straight into battle without redoing, and from then on, the game is ATB.
There are no action elements, but the tense battles were popular, and it seems that foreign RPG fans liked it.

On the other hand, the FF style faded away and the conversations between the characters seemed to be like watching a western movie, and the story was very bland.
It can be said that this game changed the direction of FF.

Final Fantasy XIII

The 13th game in the series was released in 2009 for the PS3 and then ran until 2013.
It is the trilogy of “Final Fantasy XIII”, “Final Fantasy XIII-2” and “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII”.

While there are two worlds, the terrestrial world of “Grand-Pulse (Pulse)” and the spherical world of “Cocoon”, Lightning, the first female protagonist in the series, tries to solve the mysteries of each world and save the world from crisis in this epic story.
The world view has become even more complex, the number of terminology has increased considerably, making it more difficult to grasp, and the map has become too simplistic and tasteless, and sales of the game slumped dramatically in Japan.
The first game sold nearly 2 million copies, but sales dropped to 900,000 for the second, and then dropped to less than 500,000 for the third.

In contrast to the sales, the second and third games addressed user dissatisfaction, and the game’s reputation grew with each installment.
The third game, LRFF13, is almost an open world, with a II-like system that eliminates the experience of combat, and the battle system was refined and well received, which seems like a shame.

The music aspect of the game is highly praised, especially the first game’s regular battle song, “Senko”, which is one of the most popular FF songs.

Final Fantasy XIV

This is the second online MMORPG since XI and was launched in 2010.
Utilizing the know-how cultivated in XI, it was thought that players could enjoy the more advanced FF Online in the new world ……, but problems erupted even before the service started, and it stumbled a lot at the start due to too many flaws.

Then, in 2013, a fresh start was announced with Final Fantasy XIV: The New Eorzea.
A substantial remake and sequel, the game was generally well-received and is now one of Japan’s leading online games with 16 million users.

You can only play it on PS4 and PC; you can’t play the full game on your phone. (Support is available.)
Currently, Final Fantasy XIV: The Jet Black Rebel, which is 5.0, is in development.

Final Fantasy XV

Released in 2016, three years after LRFF13, this is the first new consumer numbered title in a long time.
This 15th title in the series continues the direction of LRFF13 with a more open world-like system.
The game’s seamless and extremely large map is its main feature, and its high degree of freedom is more typical of foreign RPGs than JRPGs, and although it sold only about 1 million copies domestically, it sold 8.4 million copies worldwide including the downloadable version.

Despite the game’s strong performance overseas, the storyline was criticized severely in Japan, and there have been complaints about the biased party structure with only male characters.

Initially, the game was released on PS4 and Xbox One, but a PC version is now available.
Furthermore, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, with deformed graphics and a simplified system, is now available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and smartphones.

Summary

There are ups and downs depending on the era, but I feel like 6, 7, and 10 are the most popular to a certain extent.
It’s such a well-known work, and as the series progresses, I’m thinking, “This isn’t the FF I know! It is inevitable that there will be more complaints about this.
Still, it’s a great achievement for FF to have shifted its focus to overseas markets.

There are quite a few titles for the domestic market outside of numbering, so I recommend those as well!
