Is nothing really going to happen in [Gochusa]? A thorough examination of the films and OVAs.

Something about the “growth”

As far as the first season of the anime is concerned, Gochiusa was a story where nothing happened.
And at the same time, it was a “nothing happens” story.
Cocoa and Chino and the other main characters were all students, enjoying their days the same way, and that was what an everyday story should be.

However, Gochiusa isn’t what we call Sazae-san time and space, and time has definitely moved on in the work.
In the second season, the seasons have come full circle and everyone has moved up one grade level.

Of course, this change doesn’t mean that “something happened”.
What happened was Chino’s growth.

When she met Cocoa, Chino was a shy and slightly unassuming girl.
This is not so much because of her personality, but rather because she was confused by Cocoa, who had only just met her and was closing the distance between them.
Therefore, Chino’s gradual opening up to Cocoa in the category of the first season is not growth, but just starting to show her true form.

However, from the second season onwards, Chino starts to show a clear intention to change herself.
Especially noticeable is the courage he showed in “Sing For You”.

In the past, Chino would have refused the prominent position of a solo part.
Lizze also said in the film that she was “really surprised” by Chino’s decision to take on the role.

Character development is something most viewers would welcome in a normal anime.
However, in the case of an everyday anime, characters can change, and this isn’t necessarily supported by everyone.
If a clanker character grows up and becomes competent, the appeal to those who like clankers will be reduced by half.

In a daily life story, the growth of a character is a wise decision, and it’s an event that can be adequately described as “something that happened”.

Furthermore, in the original episodes after “Sing For You”, we can see growth in characters other than Chino, such as Maya’s answers to her questions about going to school.
Although progress is very slow, Gochiura is a story where “something happens”.

Summary

At first, Gouchousa certainly followed the “nothing happens” formula for everyday anime, but now I get the impression that it’s stepping out of that.
Even in the third season of the anime, we will be able to see something happen with Gochiusa.
I can’t wait to see what the anime group will think of it then!
