Olympic prep in anime/manga! I’ve put together a list of sports-related pieces that deal with the Olympic Games

Archery

Although not a major sport, it is secretly popular, perhaps because it appeals to the hearts of chuuninis.
In Japan, there is also “Kyudo”, a martial art that uses the bow, and it has been featured in “Tsurune -Fuuma High School Kyudo Club”, “Kaichu! There are some famous works such as “Archery Boy”, but very few archery works.
Archery Boy, a line manga, is the only one that can be said to have been created.

Canoe/Boat

Canoeing and rowing are often confused, but in a canoe, the paddler faces the direction of the boat’s progress, while in a boat, the paddler’s back is to the direction of travel.
There are two types of canoeing: slalom, in which rowers compete for time down the rapids as they pass through gates, and sprinting, in which rowers compete for time on a still-water course.
Boats include the “sweep”, in which each competitor handles one oar, and the “scull”, in which each competitor handles two oars.

Boats are based on the manga “Regatta – Kimi to Ita Eternity”, which has been made into a drama, and canoes are a novel, but the “Hibiki! You and Paddle: Nagatro High School Canoe Club” by Ayano Takeda, the author of “Euphonium”.

Bicycle

Among works about cycling competitions, the name recognition of “Wimpy Pedal,” which has been made into an anime four times, is outstanding.
It’s a full-fledged work, so it’s a great way to prepare for the Olympics.
There are also “Over Drive” and “Rondosu Daasu! and has become one of the most popular sports subjects, with anime adaptations such as

Horsemanship

There are a lot of works that feature horse racing, but there aren’t too many that pick up on the equestrian arts.
The girl’s manga “Jumping” is one of the few manga works that focuses on horsemanship, and its content is highly rated.
Although not the main theme, Silver Spoon Silver Spoon also features an equestrian club, which provides a great way to learn more about the art of horsemanship.

Sailing

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

The name of the sport used to be “yachting”, a racing competition involving sailing boats.
It’s a difficult game to draw in manga, but I’ve read “Kaze no Jin” by Hiroshi Motomiya, which was serialized in Jan-Jan, and “Shippu Uindomiru” by Kirara, which was set in the sailing club. is applicable.
Shippu Uindomuri is a great way to learn about yachting, so it’s perfect for prep work.

Shooting

Rifle is Beautiful” by JUMP+, which has been made into an anime, is the only work that uses shooting as its subject matter, although it is the same as archery, which tickles the chuuninis’ fancy, as it does not involve much movement.
Although it is a daily life work, the shooting is depicted in a realistic manner based on interviews, making it a great preparation for the Olympics.
It’s important to note that due to a rule change, the score is different in the original and the anime.

Skateboarding

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

The word “skateboarding” may not ring a bell, but “skateboarding” will be familiar to many people.
There are a few manga about skateboarding, but the most famous is “SK8R’S”, which was serialized in Spirits.
It’s a real skateboarding manga with explanations done in great detail.

Sports Climbing

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

Since bouldering has been gaining attention, it is rather well known as a sport.
The number of manga titles I’ve been working on is increasing, and I used to work on “Noboru Kodera” and a few others, but recently I’ve been working on “Iwakake! “Wall bang! Friction Girl” and serialized works have been born one after another.

Surfing

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

This is another competition that has seen an increase in the number of works and projects handled in recent years.
In 2019, director Masaaki Yuasa’s animated film “Kimi to Nami ni Noreru Tara” will be released, and the women’s media mix project “Wave! (Wave!), a media mix project for women, is in development.
The manga “SURFINGMAN” by Haruto Umezawa, the director of “Harleya II BØY”, and “Peach on the Beach” that was serialized in Fellows.

Triathlon

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

There are plenty of comics that deal with swimming, biking, and marathons, but very few of them feature a triathlon in which one person does them all.
Only “The Saturday Closest to the Full Moon in October” falls into this category.
It is the highly acclaimed work of Osamu Ishiwatari of “B-B” and “LOVe”.

Weight Lifting

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

“How many pounds of dumbbells can you hold? There are more and more works that deal with muscle training and muscles, such as “Juryo AGAIN”, but there are almost no works that deal with weightlifting as a theme.
In the manga, “Juryo AGAIN” serialized in the monthly Shonen Champion is the only one that can be said to have been written about weightlifting.

Paralympic Games

出典 : Amazon.co.jp

There are several works that deal with the sports that are the subject of the Paralympics.
The most famous one is “Real”, a story about wheelchair basketball by Slam Dunk’s Takahiko Inoue.
Other works include “Mashirohi”, a story about a blind marathon, and “Murderball”, a story about Will Chair Rugby.

In addition, NHK is developing an anime series on the theme of para-sports called “ANI X PARA: Who’s Your Hero?”, and a number of distinguished guests are working on para-sports anime, including Captain Tsubasa’s Takahashi Yoichi and Obi Kyu’s Kawai Katsutoshi.

Competitions that have not been animated or cartooned

Of all the competitions scheduled to take place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, only the Modern Pentathlon has not been turned into an anime, manga or novel.

Modern Pentathlon is the “Fencing Ranking Round”, “Swimming”, “Fencing Bonus Round”, “Equestrian”, and “Laser Run” all done by one person, also known as the “King of Sports”.
It doesn’t help that there aren’t many films that deal with fencing or even equestrian, so it doesn’t help that there aren’t any that deal with this.
If the Olympics get it going, maybe a new series will start?

Summary

Even if a sport is considered to be a minor event, it can be turned into a familiar and memorable event by being exposed to anime and manga about it!
If we win all the competitions before the Olympics, we’ll have a great summer!
